Emotional Support Animal (ESA) Letters

Compassionate, Ethical ESA Evaluations.

At That Therapy, we provide professional ESA evaluations for individuals whose mental health is meaningfully supported by the presence of an animal. This process includes a clinical assessment—not just a form—and is guided by federal standards under the Fair Housing Act.

🛑 ESA letters are not guaranteed and will only be issued if clinically appropriate.

💡 What Is an ESA Letter?

An ESA (Emotional Support Animal) letter is a legal document written by a licensed mental health professional that verifies:

  • You have a qualifying mental health condition

  • An emotional support animal helps alleviate symptoms of that condition

This letter may help you:

  • Request housing accommodations (even in no-pet housing)

  • Avoid pet fees in rental agreements

  • Receive support in campus housing or select informal settings

✈️ ESA letters do not cover air travel or access to public spaces like restaurants or stores.

🧠 Who Qualifies?

To qualify for an ESA letter, you must:

  • Be evaluated by a licensed mental health provider

  • Have a DSM-5-recognized mental health condition

  • Show that an emotional support animal alleviates symptoms related to your condition

We do not issue letters to everyone who asks. This is a clinical process grounded in clinical care—not convenience.

💵 Fees & Process

We offer ESA evaluations in two sessions:

Session 1: Intake & Mental Health Evaluation
🕒 50–60 minutes
💰 $100

Session 2: Continued Clinical Assessment
🕒 50–60 minutes
💰 $125

After both sessions, you will receive an outcome via email:

  • ✅ If clinically appropriate, a formal ESA letter will be issued

  • ❌ If not appropriate, you’ll receive a written explanation or referral
🔁 Letters are valid for 12 months and can be renewed with re-evaluation

📄 What the Letter Includes

  • Therapist name, credentials, and license information

  • A Statement confirming that a therapeutic relationship was established and a clinical evaluation was conducted

  • A carefully worded explanation of how an emotional support animal helps alleviate symptoms related to your condition, such as:

“This letter is provided based on a clinical evaluation conducted by a licensed mental health professional with personal knowledge of the client’s condition. In my professional judgment, an emotional support animal will provide support that helps alleviate one or more symptoms associated with the client’s mental health condition.”

  • Contact info for landlord verification if needed

🐶 Already Have an Animal? Not Required.

You do not need to own an animal before being evaluated. We can assess the clinical need for an ESA whether or not you currently live with one.
